1. Introduction
Using Stage Management in WorkPoint it is possible to define one or more stage models for each business module. These stage models consist of a set of stages which entities can go through.
A classic example of the use of a stage model could be tracking and controlling the stage of projects, using the following stage model:
This stage model consists of six stages: Idea, Analysis, Planning, Active, Closed, and Archived.
The sub-stages feature allows you to define sub-stages for each stage. An example could be to break up the "Analysis" stage up into sub-stages, e.g. "Data collection" "Risk analysis", etc.
Using sub-stages, the stage model above could look something like the following:

Sub-stages can be encountered in various different scenarios, e.g. when creating a new entity or when changing the stage of an entity. These scenarios will be described in this section.
2.1. Setting sub-stage on entity creation
With sub-stages enabled, they can be encountered in the Entity Creation wizard. In this example, we will create a new Office 365 Implementation project on a Project Management solution, set which stage model to use, as well as which stage and sub-stage to begin in:
- To open the our Create Project process, we click the "Project" My Tools button.
- In the "Stage" field, we can select a starting stage for our project. Selecting "Idea", which has two possible sub-stages, we can select a sub-stage in the field below.
- In the "Substage" field, we can select a sub-stage for the Idea stage to start our project in.
- In this instance, we have selected the "Data collection" sub-stage, and filled some more metadata for the project. We can now hit the "Continue" button and create the new project:
Once the project has been created, we can find it in our list of projects:
Navigating to the Project Silver site, we can inspect the current project stage:
- In the Stage Details tab of the Entity presentation, we can see the project's current sub-stage
2.2. Setting sub-stage on stage change
Sub-stage can also be set when changing stage of an entity. In this example, we will change the stage of the entity created in section 2.1. in this article to the sub-stage "Risk analysis"
- In the My Tools panel, we click the button to run our Change Stage process.
- In the Stage form, we select the new sub-stage.
- We then click the "Continue" button to proceed to the next step.
- In the Entity form, we can edit project metadata, if necessary.
- We can then click the "Save" button to update the stage and save the metadata changes.
3. Notes
Note that the sub-stage of an entity is not shown in the Stage panel.
