What is WorkPoint 365 MCP?
WorkPoint 365 MCP extends WorkPoint 365 by enabling AI agents and Microsoft Copilot experiences to securely interact with information and business processes managed through WorkPoint 365. It is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that provides a structured way for AI applications to discover, access, and work with enterprise data and functionality.
By exposing WorkPoint-managed data and operations through an MCP server, WorkPoint 365 MCP allows AI-powered solutions to access relevant business context directly from WorkPoint 365. This enables users to interact with customer, project, matter, contract, and other business information using natural language through supported Copilot and AI experiences.
How this works
WorkPoint 365 MCP complements existing WorkPoint solutions by adding a standardized AI integration layer that connects WorkPoint business data with modern AI assistants. Organizations can leverage AI-driven interactions while continuing to use the information structures, security model, and governance already established within their WorkPoint 365 solution. In practice, given that different WorkPoint solutions manage a diverse range of business content - Projects, Cases, Companies, MattersThe MCP Understanding Layer allows translating user intent in the user's natural language to the vocabulary and configuration of the WorkPoint solution.
Enabling WorkPoint 365 MCP
To use WorkPoint 365 MCP, the feature must first be enabled in your WorkPoint Solution license. In the WorkPoint Administration Portal, navigate to License Information (1) and verify that MCP Server (2) is included in your licensed features. Once enabled, an MCP configuration section becomes available under Features (3), where you can configure the capabilities and behaviour of the MCP server for your solution.
If the MCP Server feature is not enabled as shown below (1 & 2), talk to your WorkPoint Partner Manager about having the feature enabled in your license.
Getting Started with WorkPoint 365 MCP
You will need:
- Administrator access to your WorkPoint 365 Solution
- A Microsoft CoPilot Licence
- If this is the first-time the WorkPoint 365 MCP is being used on your tenant, you will need either:
- The Entra role required to Grant tenant-wide admin consent
-or- - An Administrator that can approve on your behalf (see comment below).
- The Entra role required to Grant tenant-wide admin consent
Before you begin: The WorkPoint 365 MCP uses the WorkPoint 365 WebAPI to interact with your WorkPoint solution and the SharePoint system. If this is the first time WorkPoint MCP has been used on your tenant, you will need one of the Entra roles required to Grant tenant-wide admin consent to an application. In the article below, we highlight the point in setup where you will be required to provide consent. If you do not have this role, a link is provided that can be shared with a tenant administrator allowing them to review and consent on behalf of all users.
Below, we will walk you through the process of creating a custom agent in Copilot studio that uses the WorkPoint 365 MCP to interact with a WorkPoint solution on your tenant.
1. Sign in to Microsoft Copilot Studio and select the Power Platform environment where you want to create the agent.
Setup in Copilot Studio
Tip: At time of writing, adding custom MCP tools appears more stable in the Classic Experience for Copilot Studio. For consistency, the instructions below refer to the Classic Experience UI. To follow along, change to the classic experience by using the "..." in the bottom right of the Copilot Studio UI and select "Open Classic Experience".
2. In the header section of Copilot Studio select "+ New Blank Agent" and provide an agent name that is meaningful to your implementation e.g. "WorkPoint Project Agent"
3. In the New Agent UI, provide a basic Instruction that informs the agent that it should interact with the WorkPoint MCP. You can adjust this later while refining your agent. An example initial prompt might be as follows:
You are a Project Assistant for projects managed in the WorkPoint 365 solution:
https://wp365test.onmicrosoft.com/sites/wppd26
Your role is to help users find and understand information about projects, their related content, and associated project data.Instructions:
- Use the WorkPoint 365 MCP toolset to retrieve project information from the WorkPoint solution.
- Base answers on information returned by the WorkPoint 365 MCP tools. Do not invent or assume project information that was not retrieved.
- When a user refers to a project by name, number, customer, or other identifying information, use the available WorkPoint 365 MCP tools to locate the relevant project.
- Retrieve additional project details or related content when required to answer the user's question.
- Present multiple results in simple, concise tables.
- Include clickable links to the relevant SharePoint project site, document, folder, or other content whenever a URL is available.
- Use clear, human-readable column names and include only information relevant to the user's request.
- If no matching information can be found, clearly tell the user rather than generating an answer.
- Keep responses concise and focused on the user's project-related request.
For example:
4. In the Tools section, select "+ Add Tool". This is where we will add a connection to the WorkPoint 365 MCP
5. In the "Add tool" dialog, click on "Model Context Protocol" (1 below), and in the search box enter the text "WorkPoint" (2).
This should show at least one result with the WorkPoint icon as shown below (3). This is the WorkPoint 365 MCP available directly from the Microsoft Marketplace.
Select the "WorkPoint 365 MCP" tool to continue setting up a connection.
6. In the "Add tool" dialog, expand the "Connection" dropdown (2) and select "Create new Connection"
7. In the Connection dialog, enter a name for the new connection, for example, "wp-mcp-conn-1". Because the connection can be reused across multiple agents, use a clear and consistent naming convention that makes the connection easy for other Copilot administrators to identify.
Click Create.
At this point, if this is the first WorkPoint 365 MCP connection on the tenant - you will be prompted to consent to the MCP Enterpise Application being added to the tenant and granting it permission to communicate with the WorkPoint 365 WebAPI. If you do not have the Entra Application Administrator role necessary to grant this permission on behalf of your organization - you will not be able to proceed until this is granted.
If you do not have this permission, you can forward the consent link below to an administrator who can review and approve the Entra application on behalf of the organization. Once granted, you can resume this MCP setup and establish a connection.
8. Once the connection has been established, click on "Add and configure" to resume the agent setup.
9. On completion of the "Add tool" process, the WorkPoint 365 MCP should be visible in the Tools panel of the agent setup as shown below.
10. You can now test interaction with the WorkPoint 365 using the Test Panel (right) entering some query that relates to the information in the WorkPoint solution you specified in the prompt (step 3).
For example:
Which Projects do we manage in this solution?
In the Test agent panel, we can see that the Prompt (1) has instructed Copilot to use the MCP toolset (2) to interact with the WorkPoint solution. Results are returned in the chat response (3) based on the information in the WorkPoint solution.
With your WorkPoint Agent now interacting with the WorkPoint 365 MCP server, you can refine your prompt, knowledge and toolset using all the capabilities of the Copilot studio to suit your requirements.
If you wish to review information about how you can refine the capabilities available to the WorkPoint 365 MCP toolset, please refer to the article here.
